Bay Breeze

15 November, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

As most of you know I am crazy about cocktails. As I love the art of mixing drinks, I have decided to share some of my own recipes or my favourite recipes with you on ‘Drinks on Fridays’.

I start this cocktail Friday with the ‘Bay Breeze’. The Bay Breeze is one of my favourite cocktails which makes it the perfect cocktail to start ‘Drinks on Friday’. Bay Breeze is a perfect cocktail for a hot summers day.

week 1 fri

The recipe here is by one of London’s best mixologist – Douglas Ankrah.

Ingredients:

2 Highball Glasses

4 oz Wyborowa pineapple vodka

5 0z cranberry juice

4 oz fresh pineapple juice

Hard ice cubes.

Pineapple slices for garnish

Method:

Fill the glass with ice, pour in the drinks and stir. Garnish with pineapple slices.

Alternatives

If you can’t find Wyborowa pineapple vodka, make your own pineapple vodka by infusing pineapple fruits into any (non-flavored) vodka. Cut 1 whole pineapple fruit into 5cm x 5 cm cubes and place it in an air tight bottle. Pour 750cl vodka into the bottle. Close and leave the bottle in a cool dark place. After 5 to 7 days, remove the pineapple cubes and strain the residue out. Your vodka is now ready to drink.

Pantone Spring 2014: Celosia Orange and Placid Blue

9 October, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

Pantone Inc. released its Spring 2014 colours recently. 10 new colours to design with. How exciting!

This is my take on two of the colours – celosia orange and placid blue. The combination is a great colour for spring as the placid blue sets a calm ambience whilst the celosia orange poses a fresh take on the season. I would love to design a spring wedding in these two colours.

Inspirational Board – Stone

27 September, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

Inspirational boards or mood boards are a great way to express how you feel about something. There is no right way or wrong way to create an inspirational board. I believe a good mood board is one that with one look it tells you what it is the artist is trying to say.

This week I’m proud to feature an inspiration board put together by Budding Dreamer, Sarah Ho.

The theme of this board is styled around the natural and earthy tones of stone. It is for those who want a theme that is simple yet elegant. It carries a restful and reassuring vibe whilst its neutral shades evoke pure and calm elements to the event. You can style your event purely on the raw texture of stones or even pair it with fabrics such as lace or velvet.

Have a look at the board and see for yourself!

Monopoly Afternoon

24 September, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

It has been some time since I last blogged. I have been so tied up as the Production Manager of the Singapore International Storytelling Festival 2013 as well as planning a Monopoly afternoon. I will write more about the festival later as I don’t have pictures of the festival to share with you yet.

In this blog post I plan to tell you all about the Monopoly afternoon I hosted for those I worked closely with at the festival. The idea was to wind down and play some Monopoly!

Being the party planner that I am, I decided to make the afternoon a real Monopoly party. From decor to food, the entire afternoon was themed around the board game. As with all real estate transactions, plenty of wheeling and dealing results in certain tensed moments.  My aim was to set the right ambience from the start and get everyone geared up to play for the fun of it!

Ever heard of the expression “money doesn’t grow on trees”? We stuck money bills to a cane tree to look like a real money tree. Contrary to the expression, I like the idea that everything is possible!

5

We had a Community Chest filled with old coins and chocolate gold bars. For some added fun, we put in cards with guest names on it. At the back of the card was a witty accusation relating to that person and the recent festival and demanding that they pay a fine of $5 in chocolate coins.

1

We printed Monopoly icons on little squares and made them into streamers which we hung around the room.

2

Most of our parties involve signature cocktails. For this party we served 3 drinks – a berry sangria, an appletini and an orange/lime mocktail. Of course we gave them names to suit the theme and location. The party was hosted at Hullet Road – taking the pun from the word ‘harlot’, we chose to serve a berry sangria to reflect that. Perpendicular to Hullet Road is the famous Emerald Hill of Singapore. As such, a green cocktail was in order – appletini. The mocktail was named Just Visiting. We wanted an orange colour drink to reflect the orange jumpsuits of prisoners’ since on the Monopoly board Just Visiting was a sign on the prison square. To present the drinks we styled the glasses with Mr. Monopoly’s bow ties and top hats.

16

The drinks counter was decorated with white flowers with a red base, dice and gold chocolate coins were placed around.

9

The food was a little trickier to incorporate into the theme. We decided on some simple Chinese food and gave them names of streets and Monopoly icons. The buffet table was styled with dice, chocolate gold coins and chocolate bars. We also incorporated some yellow-gold flowers to brighten the table.

15

13

Everyone has a sweet tooth so for dessert we decided to serve Mr. Monopoly cupcakes and Tarts to dice for – which were made by the lovely Lilah of the Little Red Hen.

11

10

The game table was set and each player was given a Community Chest favor (which they could use as part of a trade), a top hat and a moustache.

17

After the game ended we brought out the Chance spin-the-wheel which was designed and crafted by my talented husband. Players were asked to spin the wheel and win some chocolate coins to go home with.

19

A special thanks to Kamini Ramachandran and Geophin George for helping me plan, prepare and set up the event. In one way or another you played a big part in making the event happen.

Cool Breeze

29 August, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

The cool breeze is running through my hair. I can smell how fresh it is. It brings new beginnings at the tail end of this summer. A gentle reminder of hope and love.

I don’t think I fully appreciated the cool breeze before this week. Our air conditioner’s compressor stopped working on Sunday and we were told they couldn’t get the new part till Friday. So we had to withstand the tropical heat with fans in the last few days. I’m not complaining. It brought change to my daily routine.

I moved my home office to the dining table and left the windows open. I never realized how much wind Singapore actually has. The cool breeze sets a calm ambience in my home and lets me work in peace.

I dedicate this board to the cool breeze:

Blood Orange and Rafflesia Theme

22 August, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

I just got back from Sarawak. I was there celebrating my 2nd wedding anniversary. As both my husband and I wanted an outdoor adventure, we choose to explore the tropical rainforest from kayaking to trekking. I want to highlight our visit to Gunung Gading National Park where we saw the largest flower in the world – the Rafflesia. Now this is a rare flower that only stays in bloom for 5 to 7 days. I’ve never seen this flower in bloom before this trip, though I have visited Sarawak before. We drove for 2 hours till we got to the park and trekked up just to see this flower.

The day we went, it had been in bloom for 4 days already. The colour of the rafflesia flower in bloom starts with a dark red with leopard type spots in white. After the 3rd day – the flower starts changing its colour to an orangish shade and slowly wilts away. Seeing this flower made me think about the beauty of this flower. Being a wedding planner, my first thoughts were – I wonder if the flower has ever been the theme of a wedding before. Off course my curiosity never ends, so upon returning I decided to do some research and put together an inspiration board for a wedding theme idea around the rafflesia.

I decided to compliment the theme with Blood Oranges as the colour of this fruit reminds me of the Rafflesia on the 4th day. The colour scheme and concept reflects a deep rooted love that will suit couples looking for an exotic and passionate wedding day!

Dragon Fruit Wedding Inspiration

28 July, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

The dragon fruit is a gorgeous looking fruit. This week I decided to use this fruit as inspiration to style a wedding. This theme is for those who are looking for something exotic as a wedding theme. Definitely one of a kind.

Take a look at our inspiration board on this idea:

Elephant Love Wedding

12 July, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

This week my memory was jogged on quite a number of matters. Truly nostalgic moments. When pondering on memories- the elephant comes to mind. I’ve always admired elephants for their incredible memory.

I’ve put together a board inspired by elephants. The colours I choose to work with this inspiration are rustic purple, honey mustard gold and orange – bright contrasting colours. They represent wholeness of life in marriage. Marriage is filled with ups and downs but all those moments are memories that we hope to cherish forever, like an elephant.

Colour of the Year 2013: Emerald Green

26 June, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

Emerald Green is the pantone colour of the year. You must have already seen plenty of inspiration boards already out there with Emerald Green themes. The thing with colours and styling is there are so many palates that can be combined together to compliment each other.

When I was thinking about how I would use Emerald Green, the Wizard of Oz came to mind. What better way to incorporate emerald green into a theme than in the Emerald City itself and the oh so adorable Tin Man would compliment the look and feel of it. So here is an inspiration board I put together with the Emerald City and the Tin Man in mind.
