ELLE feature on how to party!

30 November, 2015 by Rose Kuruvilla

A little over a month ago, I was contacted by the features editor of one of my favourite fashion magazines – ELLE , asking if I would be interested to help them with a feature for their December issue. Naturally I was quite excited at this opportunity and honoured to have been asked. The feature was on planning a New Year’s Eve party and I was asked to give some practical and creative tips on how to plan it.

This is a snapshot of the cover of the December 2015 issue and the feature:

You can check out my tips in their December 2015 (Malaysia) issue which is already on sale in news stands and digitally at www.elle.my . A huge thanks to ELLE Magazine for the feature.

Ku De Ta – simply inspiring!

31 May, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

My father came to visit and I decided to give him a taste of Singapore that I love. I took him to my all time favourite place in Singapore – Ku De Ta at Marina Bay Sands. Ku De Ta at Marina Bay Sands is well known for its 360-degree panoramic view of the City’s skyline and Straits of Singapore.

Whilst the view is simply breathtaking, I really love this place more for its famed cocktails designed by Ku De Ta’s own team of mixologist. You’ll never see names like Cosmopolitan or a Mojito on the menu. Instead you get names like Blushing Baby, Tony Stark’s Pepper and Lady Be Mine. I love their inventions and the witty names they come up with. Unlike many other cocktail bars, the cocktails are not diluted or weak. The strength is just right. If you visit Ku De Ta often, you’ll find the cocktail menu changes. They once had a cocktail called ‘Mini Me’ (a drink  inspired by Austin Powers) and it featured a lychee fruit in a shot glass half filled with lychee liquer! How adorable!

These cocktail concepts inspire me to create a signature style in everything I do. In styling events, my style is to lead not follow, invent not copy, and inspire not imitate. It is ok to be inspired by amazing things people come up with, but find your own style in that inspiration and create something out of it. As John Cage said ‘I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I’m frightened of the old ones.’

So readers, as it’s Friday and the weekend is just a day away – dream a little and have a great weekend.

If you can dream it, you can do it.

“We all think alike. No one thinks very much.” – Walter Lippman

Today is my birthday and in keeping with my nature of striving for difference – my husband gave me a chance to experience something I’ve never experienced before.

supercar

Yes, that’s right. I’ve been given a chance to drive a super car in style. Now why would a wedding planner want to drive a super car? Let’s not think about the dominant nature of the sport for now.  It’s about the experience of doing something which you want to do which the average person doesn’t do or think about on a day to day basis. When you allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone, you will experience things you’ve never felt before. It allows you to dream of the endless possibilities.

I like driving and certainly love cars.  I’ve been in a super car but always as a passenger, never as the driver. So this is a big deal for me! I am very excited about this experience but I admit I’m a little nervous. For those of you who have met me before – will know that I am tiny. So imagine tiny me driving a super car. I hope it doesn’t drive me!

In a way this is how I am as a planner – it’s all about the experience. If you can dream it, you can definitely do it. I am a thrill seeker and strive for difference. With events – I like personalizing things to make it all about you. Everyone is unique in their own way. So why do most people want the same things in an event?  Why not make it about you? You don’t have to run away from traditions but you can make the tradition about you. Make it mean something to you. I believe that you must do everything with reason, even if that reason is for fun. Colour themes are a good start but why stop there? Put an object, an animal, or even a person into the mix and you will get a whole new palate of ideas which will define you.

I can take up this ultimate drive experience anytime within the next 6 months and when I decide to do it – I will share my experience with you here. So keep a look out for that post. In the meantime – keep dreaming!

The Birth of Never Ending Ideas

16 January, 2013 by Rose Kuruvilla

“Ideas excite me, and as soon as I get excited, the adrenaline gets going and the next thing I know I’m borrowing energy from the ideas themselves.” – Ray Bradbury

How many times a day do you look at an object and think about the many things you could do with it? I cannot give you the number of times I do that simply because that is how my mind works. I am curious and a dreamer. Tell me you like balloons and I will float you in the air!

Planning weddings and events was never something I envisioned myself doing professionally until I planned my big day.

My big day was just that – BIG. Not just by the amount of people who came but with the concept and theme of the whole day in itself. My husband and I wanted something different. We didn’t want a typical colour themed wedding. We chose a Jungle theme with birds and pink roses. Highlights of our wedding included a Bird photo booth, an interpretive dance as a grand entrance to our first dance. Every detail fell within the theme. (You will see pictures of our wedding in the gallery).

We looked for a wedding planner in Malaysia and could not find a single person that could do the job as detailed and excited, as we wanted them to be. Having to plan our wedding ourselves with the help of family members and friends, we had our dream wedding.

I worked in a lot of theatre productions and planned many social events in school and University. My whole life has been about detail and studying law further emphasized my love for details. After planning my wedding I just knew that planning was for me.  It is the perfect combination of my love to dream and my detailed organizational skills.

With the birth of Never Ending Ideas – I aim to put fresh ideas on the table and give you an event you deserve.  From conceptualizing to planning to executing – we do it all. Most importantly we make the event all about you.

My blog entries will feature some of my ideas, my thoughts, my experiences and the work that I do.

Enjoy the read!
